- IGN called Replaced an “AI-based adventure,” causing confusion among players.
- Sad Cat Studios clarified the game is fully handcrafted. AI is only part of the story, not development.
- IGN deleted the post and fixed the wording, highlighting how small mislabels can hurt indie games already struggling for visibility.
Indie developers already fight an uphill battle for visibility, and this week delivered a fresh reminder of how fragile that spotlight can be.
Gaming outlet IGN briefly stirred controversy after posting a review snippet of Replaced on X, calling it “one AI-based adventure” while awarding it a 7/10. The phrasing quickly raised eyebrows, especially in a climate where “AI-made” games are increasingly scrutinized.
For a smaller studio like Sad Cat Studios, that kind of wording can shape perception overnight.
The developers responded directly, clarifying the situation: Replaced is “100% handcrafted,” with no generative AI used in its creation. The confusion, they explained, came from the game’s narrative, which explores artificial intelligence in an alternate 1980s America, not from its development process.
Before the post was taken down, a user known as @dotCloud asked if the game had been made with AI. The studio reiterated their stance: no AI tools were used, only traditional development methods.
IGN later deleted the original social media post and updated the review article to correct the wording.
For indie creators, moments like this are more challenging than they might for AAA studios. When you’re already competing against publisher-backed marketing machines, even a small misunderstanding can snowball into misplaced skepticism.
Replaced has been gaining attention for its striking 2.5D visuals and atmospheric world. But this incident highlights that clarity matters more than ever, and mislabeling can cost developers trust they can’t easily afford to lose.
