✎ SUMMARY
- Itch.io has introduced new content guidelines restricting games that feature sensitive themes, going further than Steam’s recent policy changes.
- The updates follow pressure from Australian advocacy group Collective Shout and from payment providers’ withdrawing support for hosting such content.
- Many indie developers face widespread removals and uncertain guidelines, sparking concerns about creative freedom on a platform known for supporting experimental games.
Itch.io, the indie game marketplace beloved for its creative freedom and diverse catalog, has recently tightened its content guidelines, removing games that include mature themes deemed inappropriate by payment processors and advocacy groups.
This move marks a significant shift, as the platform now bans titles featuring sensitive content such as close-relative relationships, coercion, and other troubling scenarios.
The new guidelines come amid a campaign led by Collective Shout, an Australian group focused on combating the harmful portrayal and exploitation of women in media. They have pressured payment networks like Visa and Mastercard to stop supporting storefronts that distribute games containing abusive or violent material.
While Steam has similarly responded by removing a number of titles featuring problematic content, Itch.io’s restrictions are notably broader and more comprehensive.
In a recent update, Itch.io outlined a list of prohibited themes:
- Content depicting non-consensual acts (whether explicit or implied)
- Themes involving minors or characters presented as just over the age of majority
- Depictions of close-relative relationships or pseudo-family scenarios
- Content involving animals in an inappropriate context
- Scenarios implying force or coercion
- Themes related to exploitation or trafficking
- Content suggesting privacy violations, such as voyeurism or non-consensual recordings
- Fetishes involving bodily harm or extreme discomfort
While developers have the option to appeal bans on individual titles, the sheer volume of removals and the need for detailed content review present a major challenge. Itch.io itself acknowledges the complexity of enforcing these rules and states that they handle issues case-by-case as they arise.
This sweeping change has stirred concern among indie creators, many of whom rely on Itch.io as a primary platform to share games that explore mature, sometimes controversial themes in thoughtful or artistic ways. One notable removal was Love’s Heart, a relationship simulation game set in a fantasy academy where players develop bonds with various characters, including options that hint at close-relative relationships. Though still available on Steam, the game was among those removed from Itch.io.
Interestingly, Collective Shout distanced itself from Itch.io’s broader restrictions, clarifying that their campaign targeted content that normalized harmful behavior and abuse, rather than all mature material. The group noted, “We asked Itch.io to remove content involving violence and abuse against women. The platform chose to restrict all mature content beyond that.”
Meanwhile, the wider conversation around content moderation and censorship continues to evolve. An ACLU petition opposing payment processors’ influence on digital storefront policies has garnered close to 150,000 signatures, signaling widespread concern over the balance between protecting audiences and preserving creative expression.
For a platform like Itch.io, which has long championed indie creators and unconventional storytelling, these new restrictions mark a turning point. As payment networks increase their oversight, the indie game community watches closely to see how these policies will shape the future landscape of mature content in gaming.
